Mission to Israel November 2011

2011 World ORT Missions to Israel, Kishinev and Odessa

31st October – 4th November, 2011

This was a unique opportunity to experience first-hand World ORT activities in Israel and the Former Soviet Union. This was a special mission chaired by Sir Maurice Hatter, President Emeritus of World ORT. Delegates first visited Israel, then continued on to Kishinev and Odessa to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of World ORT’s return to the Former Soviet Union.

Visiting World ORT’s projects involves taking a tour through one’s emotions – from the pain of seeing the sometimes extreme challenges which fellow human beings have to overcome to the joy of being able to help them build a better future. The mission to Kiryat Yam in Israel, followed by visits to Kishinev, Moldova and Odessa, Ukraine was no exception.

Led by World ORT President Emeritus Sir Maurice Hatter a group of ORT supporters marvelled at the $18 million Alex and Betty Schoenbaum Science, Educational, Cultural and Sport Campus through which World ORT has revitalised the centre of the blue-collar city of Kiryat Yam, raising educational outcomes and giving local people more chances to realise their aspirations. Then it was on to the Former Soviet Union to see how ORT is helping Jews, some of them living in heartbreaking poverty, re-attach to their ancient heritage while gaining skills and knowledge that will give them the best possible chance to make the most of 21st century career opportunities.

And while in Kishinev, the mission sealed the creation of a new school to replace the ageing, cramped buildings currently used by ORT. To be named after the late father of ORT Moldova President Ilan Shor, the school will be the largest Jewish day school in the Former Soviet Union when it is up and running in 2012.
